The Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 have delivered a dramatic political shift, with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single-largest party based on counting trends.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) data at 5:00 p.m., TVK had secured victory in 15 constituencies and was leading in 94 seats, placing it well ahead of its competitors.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) managed to win 2 seats and was leading in 43 constituencies, while the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) trailed with 8 wins and leads in 51 seats.
Other political parties, including the Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), were leading in a limited number of constituencies.
Celebrations Across Chennai
As TVK maintained a strong lead, celebrations broke out at the party’s headquarters in Chennai. Supporters gathered in large numbers, waving party flags, distributing sweets, and celebrating enthusiastically.
Major Upset in Kolathur
In one of the most shocking outcomes of the election, TVK candidate V.S. Babu defeated Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the Kolathur constituency.
V.S. Babu secured 68,419 votes, winning by a margin of 7,731 votes, marking a significant political upset in Tamil Nadu politics.
Strong Urban Performance
TVK demonstrated strong performance across key urban constituencies, especially in Chennai, where it was leading in Egmore, Anna Nagar, Villivakkam, and Thousand Lights.
This trend indicates growing urban support for the party and its leadership.
Vijay Leads from Two Constituencies
Party leader Vijay was ahead in both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, further strengthening TVK’s impressive debut in electoral politics.
In Tiruchirappalli East, his main rival from DMK, Inigo Irudayaraj, was trailing during the early rounds of counting.
High Voter Turnout
Polling for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections was conducted on April 23 across all 234 constituencies, recording a voter turnout of 85.1 percent.
According to the Election Commission, a total of 4,023 candidates contested in this election.
